Background

From the 20th to the 22nd of June 2012, the UN Conference on Sustainable Development will take place in Rio de Janeiro as follow-up conference to the first “Earth Summit” that took place in Rio in 1992 (Rio+20). The world’s heads of state and government are to provide fresh impetus to sustainable development.

Tourism is another topic of discussion of this conference. The tourism industry is the biggest service sector and has experienced enormous growth over the last 20 years. Similarly growing are the CO2 emissions due to passenger transportation. The demands of an ever growing number of travellers aggravate already existing conflicts about resources (territory, water, energy etc.) in tourist destinations and increase the pressure on local ecosystems. Many of these problems have already been discussed on the occasion of the first Earth Summit in Rio in 1992. The necessity of an institutional and policy framework in order to guarantee sustainable development in tourism has been acknowledged.
What about sustainability in tourism today, 20 years after what was often called the historic Earth Summit in Rio? Which objectives have been achieved, which opportunities have been missed? How have the framework conditions changed over the last 20 years and which new, focal challenges have been added? How will tourism have to work in the future in order to take into account the demands of a “Green Economy”?
